There are many varieties of gear boxes (if you hear someone call then mech boxes, its still the same thing). The two major categories are what I will call the Standard and Boy's gear boxes. There are similarities between these two categories of gear boxes, as well as differences. One similarity is that they both use three main gears: bevel (closest to the motor), spur (middle gear) and sector (one that connects to the piston). Differences include the fact that the motor of the Boy's gear box is often inside the gear box itself, while the Standard gear box is often towards what would be the handgrip in the AEG. There are different Versions of the Standard gear boxes, as well as gear boxes that are made out of plastic or metal, but the layout is just the same. Sample layout (with parts labled) of a typical gear box. Again, the shapes, sizes or material it is made of may vary, but the basic layout remains the same.
